SUGGESTION AND RESPONSE IN HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF BLOOD PRINCE NOVEL WRITTEN BY J.K ROWLING

The purposes of this research are to find out the suggestion strategy based on politeness strategy and the response to the strategy. In this analysis the writer uses descriptive qualitative method. To analyze the data, the writer uses some theories such as suggestion theory by Banerjee and Carrell, politeness theory by Brown and Levinson, and prference organization theory by Levinson. The data are taken from Harry Potter and The half Blood Prince Novel written by J.K. Rowling. The result of the analysis are there are 50 data which uses bald record, on record with positive politeness, on record with negative politeness, and off record. Regarding responses, most of the charactters in the novel use preferred response. It’s due to the fact that the benefit of the suggestion is for the hearer. By using the politeness strategy above, the hearer is assured by the speaker that the intention of the suggestion is to help and there is no desire to impose.
